What Is Intentional Interior Design?
And Why You & Your Home Deserves It
We talk a lot about "intention" these days, it’s a word you hear used A LOT on social media. Intentional eating, intentional movement, intentional living. But what does it actually mean to bring intention into your home design?
As an interior designer, I believe it is the most powerful shift you can make in how you live. So let's unpack what it is and important what it isn’t
Intentional design isn’t just buying stuff
We all know we live in a consumerist society and we all fall for it daily. For too long interior design has placed too much focused on how a room looks. When you work with a designer its a given it will look beautiful BUT will the design support your day to day living? Do the products heal your nervous system or literally make you ill with the chemicals they offgas?
Intentional design involves conscious thought. We move away from buying something purely because its pretty and consider the whole product. How is it made? How will I dispose of the product when I am finished with it? Does the item fulfil the need I have for it? Is it toxic? How much of the product will end up inside me?
I’m sorry what I hear you ask! Yes literally that, how much of the product will you ingest. Either through breathing in the chemicals its made from, absorbing it through your skin when you make contact with it or how much will ingest when you eat or drink using it.
Intentional design isn't about style; it's about purpose
One of my biggest bug bears is that people assume interior design is about trends. Not in this studio! Yes colour and beauty absolutely matter, I'll never stop believing a joyful, colourful home is essential. But intentional design goes a layer deeper than aesthetics.
Intentional interior design asks a different question before any of the pretty stuff: what do I need this space, and this life, to feel like? Every design decision should come back to how you want to feel in that room.
Every colour choice, every piece of furniture, every storage solution and daily routine your home supports is either working for your wellbeing or quietly working against it. Intentional design means choosing, on purpose, rather than defaulting.
And whilst we are here stop caring what other people think - I will never miss an opportunity to reiterate that it is YOUR HOME so your opinion is the only one that matters
The three pillars of a truly intentional home
1. How a space makes you feel
Colour psychology, light, texture and scale all speak to your nervous system before you've consciously registered a single object.
A bedroom that's meant to be restful needs a different palette and rhythm to a kitchen that's meant to energise a busy morning. Intentional design starts by naming the feeling you're designing for.
2. What a space is made from
A home can look beautiful and still be working against you if it's full of materials that off-gas, synthetic finishes, or fabrics chosen for price over safety. Intentional design means asking what's actually in your walls, your soft furnishings and your finishes because your home should be a sanctuary, not a source of low-level stress on your body.
3. How a space actually functions for your life
A gorgeous room that has nowhere for keys, coats, post or the daily debris of family life isn't serving you it's creating friction every single day.
Intentional design builds in the systems and storage that make daily life easier, so your home holds you rather than adding to your to-do list.
Why this matters more than ever
So many of us have already done the work of bringing intention to our bodies : how we eat, how we move, how we rest. But our homes, the space we spend more time in than almost anywhere else, often get left on autopilot: furnished in a rush, decorated to impress rather than to support, organised reactively rather than by design.
Intentional interior design closes that gap. It takes the same care you bring to your wellbeing and applies it to the four walls around you.
Bringing it to life
This is exactly the shift I wanted to create space for with The Conscious Home: Designed with Intention an interior design retreat running 12–16 October 2026 at the beautiful Palm Court Retreats in Polperro, Cornwall.
Over four days, in a small group of just eight, we'll work through everything above in a hands-on, immersive way: understanding your home as a sanctuary, exploring biophilic design and colour psychology, tuning into how your senses respond to a space, building a moodboard for your own home, and leaving with a real, applicable vision — not just inspiration, but a plan.
If you've already brought intention to your wellbeing and you're ready to bring it home too, I'd love to have you join us. Spaces are limited, and they're going fast.
